Chapter one takes place in both Battleground Park [Revolutionary War site] and Country park, a park located beside the battleground park. These parks are not far from my home. Rule #1: Write what you know! Keeping House had three false starts. The first draft had chapter one in Disney World, of all places! I threw that one away. So, I came home to Greensboro and set the stage there.Today I took a Sunday morning stroll in Country park, where Chapter One takes place.
As you walk along, you can see in the distance Shelter #7. It sits on top of a green grassy hill that overlooks the lake. Originally, this is the shelter that I choose for Gary and his friends to have their picnic lunch. In the end, I moved the scene to the shelter near the Science Center, that overlooks the Paddle Boats. But if I were making a movie of chapter one, scene one, this is it..
Here is the paddle boat dock. When you read my book, you'll know how important this location is...
In Chapter One, it is October, and the lake and trees will be burnished yellow, orange, and gold. But today the willow tree was green, signaling the end of winter at long last...
As I walked to Shelter #7, I crossed this humble bridge...
I climbed the hill to the shelter and found the dogwood trees beginning to bloom and a secret stairway...
On my walk, I stumbled onto an amazing tree with roots spread out like a spider's web...
And everywhere, in the trees and on the ground, the first signs of spring were flowering brightly.
